Though Tsuyahime is a new variety, its origins can be traced back to Kame-no-o, a variety grown in the Shonai area during the Meiji period. The Tsuyahime rice fields are naturally irrigated by the spring waters of the Three Mountains of Dewa (出羽三山), giving the rice its large grain and distinctive taste, smell, and texture.
